Who is Hauora Tairāwhiti?

Hauora Tairāwhiti (previously Tairāwhiti District Health) is:

  • the main planner and funder of health services in Tairāwhiti
  • a provider of hospital services through Gisborne Hospital 
  • a provider of health services in the community
  • a promoter of our population's health and wellbeing
  • the largest employer in Tairāwhiti, employing over 900 people in our services.

Hauora Tairawhiti's strategic direction and policy is set by a board and its subcommittes. It ensure that the direction is consistent with Government objectives. Operational management is delegated to the Chief Executive.

Hauora Tairāwhiti's governing Board is made up of 11 members. Seven are elected at the three yearly local body elections and up to four are appointed by the Minister of Health.

The Minister also appoints the Chair and Deputy Chair from the members. Boards are required to have at least two Māori representatives and in general reflect the diversity of the people and interests within Tairāwhiti...
