Outpatients Department
The Outpatients Department offers a clinical service for patients in the community who have been referred by a General Practitioner to see the surgical and medical specialists. Fracture clinics are held three times a week and numerous visiting specialist clinics are held. Outpatients is staffed from 8am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Almost all appointments, excluding Mental Health and Paediatrics, are generated from this department.

Emergency Department
The Emergency Department provides treatment for approximately 14,000 patients annually. Medical and nursing personnel staff the department 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Persons presenting with conditions suitable to be managed by a General Practitioner will be assessed by the triage nurse and/or Emergency Department doctor and referred back to their local General Practitioner.

Wards
ICU/CCU
ICU/CCU is a six bed unit which covers specialties from Coronary Care through to High Dependency and Intensive Care, including ventilated patients, temporary pacing, and rarely, paediatrics. We also have the ability to monitor five telemetry patients in the medical ward.
The unit has anaesthetic cover on a rostered basis to support the Medical and Surgical Consultants who admit and manage patients in the department. We also have the support of a senior nurse specialising in Cardiac Rehabilitation.
Our team of registered nurses is led by a Clinical Nurse Manager who supports and encourages ongoing education for all staff, including a comprehensive orientation package for new staff members. New staff to our department are also given the opportunity to work in a larger Intensive Care or Coronary Care Unit to gain an insight to the next level of care that some of our patients may require.

Rehabilitation Unit
The Rehabilitation Unit has 10 beds of which eight are dedicated for rehabilitation purposes and two dedicated to Palliative Care services. The Rehabilitation Unit is situated alongside other inpatient services and provides multi-disciplinary rehabilitation services for the people served by Tairawhiti District Health Board.
The Rehabilitation Unit has a multi-disciplinary team comprising of a physician with an interest in rehabilitation, the nursing team and dedicated physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech & language therapy staff who strive to provide quality care in a professional manner. To enable improved networking and benchmarking the Rehabilitation Unit has recently joined the Australasian Rehabilitation Outcomes Centre (AROC).
The team is led by a Clinical Nurse Manager who encourages ongoing education for all staff and values new graduate nurses and nursing students as part of the team.
In addition to the inpatient service, the Rehabilitation Unit runs a monthly Day Assessment Clinic for those who require assistance to maintain their level of independence and quality of life in their own home. Referrals are accepted from local GPs and other health professionals.
The Palliative Care beds are situated at the end of the ward and are supported by a dedicated Palliative Care specialist and Palliative Care nurses who visit daily to plan treatment and offer support and advice.

Ward 8 (Surgical)
Ward 8 has 22 General Surgical beds and manages patients from a range of surgical specialties including Vascular, Upper and Lower GI, Hepato-Biliary and Gynaecology.
There is a team of four General Surgeons, three Gynaecologists and a range of visiting surgeons who provide a range of surgical services, including Urology.
The surgical service is supported by senior nurses specialising in Stomaltherapy, Wound Care & Oncology.
The nursing team is led by a Clinical Nurse Manager who encourages ongoing education of all staff.
Along with the core competencies required to work on a general surgical ward, we also offer further post graduate studies on a variety of subjects including Advanced Clinical Assessment, Pharmacology, Research and Law and Ethics.
The ward welcomes nursing student placements and has a yearly intake of graduate nurses

Ward 9 (Orthopaedics)
Ward 9 has 15 beds and predominantly manages acute & elective orthopaedic patients but also manages a number of ENT and Ophthalmology patients.
There are four orthopaedic surgeons, two ENT surgeons and one ophthalmologist who work at Gisborne Hospital.
The nursing team is led by a Clinical Nurse Manager who encourages ongoing education for all staff and values new graduate nurses and students as part of the team. In addition to the dedicated therapy staff, the service is supported by a Specialty Nurse who is responsible for the planning and pre-assessment of elective surgical workload that includes over 110 joint replacements per year.
Ward 5 (Medical)
Ward 5 is a 24-bedded General Medical ward that manages a range of acute general medical patients.
The team consists of four physicians, the nursing team and dedicated therapy staff who are supported by senior nurses specialising in renal, diabetes, oncology, respiratory and palliative care nursing.
The ward is an interesting and supportive environment that supports on-going professional development and welcomes nursing students and graduate nurses.
