What to Bring

While we will take every care with your personal property, all personal belongings brought into Gisborne Hospital are done so at your own risk. We suggest you label all your belongings. Gisborne Hospital cannot accept responsibility for loss or theft of personal property.

Medicines

If you are taking any medications, including any natural remedies, rongoa Maori or supplements, please bring them with you and hand them to the nursing staff.

If you have written details of any treatment you need, show them these too. Please tell staff if you or your child / tamariki suffer from any allergies. The doctor will need to review your medication and you will be told if a change is necessary.

Glasses, Hearing Aids, Dentures and Walking Aids

Bring the cases for your glasses and hearing aids so they can be put safely away when they are not in use.

Please bring your denture cleaning container with you.

Please don’t wrap your glasses, dentures or hearing aids in tissues. And avoid leaving them under or on your pillow, on meal trays, or loose on locker tops.

Toiletries

Please bring your own soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving kit, comb, brush, tampons/sanitary towels and tissues/hankies.

Night Attire

Please bring your own pyjamas/nightdresses, dressing gown and slippers. It is important to wear something on your feet when walking about the ward.

Some Things You May Like To Have

If you are an inpatient you may like to bring:-

Books, magazines, writing materials, small hobby work. For children / tamariki, Please bring a favourite toy or cuddly.

Light clothing for when you are up and about, such as a tracksuit, trousers and shirt or blouse are also recommended.

Money for the telephone, newspapers and any items you may wish to purchase from the hospital cafeteria is recommended.

TVs, Radios And Other Electrical Appliances

You may wish to bring  a radio or television however; we ask that you use earphones while listening to your radio or television, in consideration of other patients. TVs are not allowed in some areas, so please ask your nurse.

Electrical appliances brought into Gisborne Hospital should be electrically safe. Gisborne Hospital cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage caused to your personal electrical appliances.

Beds and Pillows

The hospital mattresses and pillows are covered with a protective plastic for hygiene reasons. You are allowed to bring a sheepskin with you for extra comfort. You may also bring your own pillow with pillowcase if preferred. Please note, that Gisborne Hospital cannot take responsibility for the loss, damage or soiling of personal sheepskins, pillows, or pillowcases.

Valuables Including Jewellery And Money

Only bring into hospital what is absolutely necessary. Gisborne Hospital cannot take responsibility for cash, jewellery, watches or other valuables. Valuables include your false teeth, glasses and hearing aid.

When necessary, valuables or money may be kept in a locked cupboard in your ward. Please ask nurse.
